Port of Everett raises more than $1,600 for United Way at silent auction
Everett, Wash. - In only two hours, the Port of Everett's employees raised more than $1,600 to benefit the United Way of Snohomish County during a silent auction last week.
Hoping to ignite a bidding war, Port staff brought in food, gifts and games to be auctioned off during the Port's annual fundraising kickoff event. Led by Marine Terminals Manager Scott Grindy, the staff more than doubled last year's donations.
"Having the opportunity to lead the United Way fundraiser for the Port of Everett this year has been especially humbling in light of all the natural disasters the nation experienced this year," Grindy said. "We as people often see, via the media, so much about our country as a whole, we often forget the immediate needs that exist in our own backyard. By donating to the United Way of Snohomish County, we ensure that these dollars will be distributed appropriately to assess the need in our county, as well as the nation."
In addition to the silent auction, Port staff have pledged money from their paychecks to the organization. Last year employees donated more than $5,200 from their paychecks, and are on track to exceed that number this year. The United Way helps fund more than 114 programs and 49 agencies in Snohomish County, including the Red Cross, Boys and Girls Clubs, the new 211-resource hotline and the 420 hurricane evacuees in our county.
"The United Way would like to thank the Port of Everett staff for their generosity and support for our local community at this year's United Way Kickoff," said Tami Lentz, campaign executive for the United Way of Snohomish County. "These donations will directly impact the lives of needy children and families here in Snohomish County."
